arte magra; from the opaque

AUSTRALIAN EXPERIMENTAL ART FOUNDATION

EXHIBITION TEXTS

Recently I have been wandering around my neighbourhood, slowly gathering dead and decaying plant material. This organic detritus will be combined with various materials to form the basis of a series of short-lived sculptural arrangements. Reminiscent of the Japanese tradition of ikebana, a highly structured form of floral arranging, considered to be calming for both creator and viewer, these works will be made in contemplative silence.

arte magra; from the opague supports fourteen artists/partnerships to make and stage work in Adelaide: at the AEAF and various locations off-site (see map). Its title arte magra (‘lean’ or ‘meagre’ art) references the art movement arte povera that unfolded in northern Italy in the late 60s and early 70s while its subtitle, from the opaque, quotes an autobiographical essay by Italo Calvino.
